Veterans Powering the UK's Offshore Wind Future

As the UK continues its transition to clean energy, one workforce is making a significant contribution to the growth of offshore wind: military veterans.

Veterans bring a unique combination of leadership, resilience, technical expertise, and a mindset to take controlled risks—qualities that are highly valued across offshore wind operations. From project management and engineering to maintenance and logistics, many of the skills developed during military service transfer seamlessly into the renewable energy sector. That's why this week we are delighted to have returned to Global Offshore Wind in Manchester.

The offshore wind industry also offers Veterans the opportunity to continue working in mission-driven environments, tackling complex challenges while contributing to the UK's energy security and net-zero ambitions.

As demand for skilled workers grows, stronger partnerships between the Armed Forces community, trade bodies, training providers, and renewable energy employers will be essential. By supporting Veterans into offshore wind careers, we can address critical skills shortages while creating meaningful opportunities for those transitioning from service.

It is worth noting that the UK's offshore wind success story is not just about turbines and technology—it's also about the talented people helping to build a more sustainable future.

UK government clean energy jobs plan for Veterans

Last year, by working with government and RenewableUK we were able to influence The UK Government's Clean Energy Jobs Plan so that it included initiatives to support Veterans and Service Leavers in transitioning into clean energy jobs. This included Offshore Wind of course, part of the industry that is already seeing a great deal of the Armed Forces community take up roles. Here is a link to the plan:

Veterans and Service Leavers Support: Targeted support is provided for veterans and service leavers, ensuring they can find good, unionised jobs in the clean energy sector.

None of this happens by accident

Advocacy for Veterans in the sector has come about as part of a drive from Mission Community via our Mission Renewable sector initiative. Thanks to support from RenewableUK Office for Veterans' Affairs and Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust we have been able to make the case for Veterans as a force for good. This has been helped by the introduction of the Veterans Industry Engagement Programme that helps provide the leadership for Veterans to be able to thrive. We look forward to continuing to champion this cause this week at Global Offshore Wind.
