Championing the Armed Forces
Recognising, demonstrating and celebrating the Armed Forces Community in UK Society
About Mission Community
Mission Community- Recognising, demonstrating and celebrating the Armed Forces community in UK society- is part of a concerted effort by the third sector, government and veterans themselves to change the narrative around veterans and the wider Armed Forces community. We have a shared belief that service is recognised, valued and underpins UK society.
Our starting point was to begin this vital work within business, through our ‘sector initiatives’; Armed Forces engagement campaigns linked to a UK industry body or trade association. The UK government has recognised our model for change, endorsing through the creation of the veterans industry engagement programme, delivered by us on behalf of the Office for Veterans’ Affairs and funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.
Our sector initiative campaigns promote and share best practice, harness exemplars and help companies to access and retain talent, changing behaviours in the workplace, whilst empowering industry. They make the commercial and social value case for Armed Forces community engagement and use the industry bodies as champions for that cause. They reinforce and connect government and third sector support, promoting and rewarding collaboration. In this way, sustainable and relevant employment opportunities for Service Leavers, Veterans, Reservists, and their families are generated, and an enduring Armed Forces’ ‘community of communities’ is created within industry.
Our Heritage
Mission Community’s roots are within Mission Motorsport- The Forces’ Motorsport Charity, a charity founded by Army Veteran James Cameron, who since 2012, have been helping those affected by military operations by engagement through motorsport. A Service Charity and a member of the Confederation of Service Charities, Mission Motorsport has an award-winning collaborative model of working with government and the other service charities.
In 2019 we launched the first sector initiative campaign ‘Mission Automotive’ as the Armed Forces engagement initiative for the UK automotive industry in partnership with The Royal Foundation and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, and with the support of the Ministry of Defence. In 2021 this model was replicated for the renewable energy sector, with the establishment of ‘Mission Renewable’. Both initiatives continue to champion the Armed Forces in their respective industries, advocating more widely for other sectors to follow.
Every year, Mission Motorsport and Mission Community co-deliver the National Transition Event at Silverstone, UK.
The Future
The award of our grant through the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, enables Mission Community to bring a proven, tested best practice sharing framework to other sectors. We are working with a wide-range of industry bodies, trade associations and exemplars - and to help UK industry to uplift and harness a national strategic asset - our Armed Forces communities.
We also look beyond industry using our model of recognising, demonstrating and celebrating the Armed Forces community in society.
