Guide to Remembrance
The Poppy
The red poppy is a symbol of both Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. Poppies are worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces community. Wearing a poppy is a personal choice, reflecting individual experiences and personal memories. It is never compulsory but is greatly appreciated by those who it is intended to support.
What can you do? Royal Marine veteran graphic designer Chris Shirley is offering a free ‘poppifying’ service to all organisations who want to add the poppy to their social media logo. See links to ‘Haus of Hiatus’ below. Donations to RBL encouraged by return.
You can also contact your local RBL branch to offer your premises as a place to hold poppy selling, or why not do a collection internally to then send to the RBL?
The RBL have branches up and down the UK, and their volunteers lead on local Remembrance.
What can you do? Why not reach out to them, by using the RBL’s website below, and collaborating on local events. Your local council will also lead on the organising and promotion of Remembrance events.
The Armistice.
The Armistice was an agreement which ended the fighting of the First World War commencing at 11am on 11th November 1918. We mark Armistice Day around the UK with a Two Minute Silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month.
What can you do? Do you have a Teams meeting scheduled for 11am on the 11th? Why not incorporate a 2 min silence into the meeting, or delay its start? You might even choose to gather as a community within the communal areas of your building.
Social Media. Probably the easiest thing we can do to Remember.
What can you do? Posting in the lead up, and on both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, will advocate powerfully for the community. See RBL links below. Why not make a simple video, remembering people you might know, or reading one of the poems the RBL supply on their website?
Wreaths can be ordered any time of year from the Poppy Shop UK or Telephone: 0345 845 1945. Do consider that the build up to Remembrance is a busy time for orders.
What can you do? Whether you can or cannot obtain a wreath, why not hold a mini-service in your building. You can even use items such as poppies themselves, and offer individuals to lay a single poppy at a designated site. See below for guidance from RBL.
